A heavy equipment manufacturing division in Pittsburgh, PA, is hiring a 5th-Class Vertical Boring Mill (VBM) Machinist. We produce components for mining equipment, steel mill machinery, and power generation: large-diameter discs, flanges, flywheels, bearing races, and transition plates up to 6 feet in diameter and 5 tons in weight.
📋 **Core Responsibilities:**
• Setup & Indicating: Aligning and clamping massive workpieces (up to 5 tons) on the machine table using dial indicators.
• Machining: Turning OD/ID surfaces, facing, and boring to tight tolerances (0.001"–0.002").
• Bearing Seats: Machining precision bearing and seal surfaces to specified finishes.
• Large Threading: Cutting metric and buttress threads on heavy components.
• Finish Turning: Achieving required surface roughness on final passes.
🎓 **Requirements:**
• Vocational training and 3+ years of experience on vertical boring mills or large manual lathes.
• Proficiency with dial indicators, micrometers, bore gauges, and technical drawings.
• Patience and safety consciousness: Dropping a 5-ton workpiece is catastrophic. No rushing on setup.
