A precision machine shop in Cleveland, OH, is hiring a 5th-Class Manual Lathe Machinist for long shaft, lead screw, and repair axle production. We serve grain elevators, pump stations, and small manufacturers. Work ranges from emergency one-off shaft repairs to small batches of conveyor screws.
📋 **Core Responsibilities:**
• Long Part Setup: Mounting long workpieces between centers with steady rest support (fixed or traveling).
• Deflection Control: Managing tool pressure to prevent workpiece bending on shafts over 40" long—this is the core challenge.
• Finish Turning: Holding tolerances of 0.001"–0.002" and achieving specified surface finish.
• Long Threading: Cutting metric, ACME, and buttress threads along lengths up to 80".
• Material Adaptation: Selecting speeds/feeds for carbon steel, stainless, and alloy steels.
🎓 **Requirements:**
• Proven experience in finish turning and maintaining concentricity on long parts.
• Ability to control chatter and select cutting parameters that prevent vibration.
• Strong measurement discipline and accountability for parts that go straight into customer equipment.
