A precision machine shop in Portland, OR, is hiring a 5th-Class Manual Lathe Machinist specializing in alloy steel components. We produce pins, bushings, shafts, custom threaded fasteners, and bearing seats for repair services and small OEMs. Short-run production: 1 to 20 pieces per batch.
π **Core Responsibilities:**
β’ Precision Turning: Machining OD/ID surfaces to tolerances of 0.001" on tough alloy steels.
β’ Threading: Cutting metric and ACME threads in 4140, 4340, and 300M steels.
β’ Surface Finish Control: Achieving Ra 32β63 Β΅in (0.8β1.6 Β΅m) after finish passes.
β’ Pre-Hardening Operations: Rough and semi-finish turning before heat treat (parts will be ground after).
β’ Tool Management: Selecting carbide inserts, drills, and reamers matched to specific alloy grades; managing coolant flow to prevent burning.
π **Requirements:**
β’ 5+ years of experience machining hardened and alloy steels without burning tools or workpieces.
β’ Deep understanding of cutting parameters, tool geometry, and coolant application for tough materials.
β’ Meticulous surface finish inspection and independent tool wear monitoring.
