A precision machine shop in Portland, OR, is hiring a 5th-Class Manual Lathe Machinist specializing in alloy steel components. We produce pins, bushings, shafts, custom threaded fasteners, and bearing seats for repair services and small OEMs. Short-run production: 1 to 20 pieces per batch.
📋 **Core Responsibilities:**
• Precision Turning: Machining OD/ID surfaces to tolerances of 0.001" on tough alloy steels.
• Threading: Cutting metric and ACME threads in 4140, 4340, and 300M steels.
• Surface Finish Control: Achieving Ra 32–63 µin (0.8–1.6 µm) after finish passes.
• Pre-Hardening Operations: Rough and semi-finish turning before heat treat (parts will be ground after).
• Tool Management: Selecting carbide inserts, drills, and reamers matched to specific alloy grades; managing coolant flow to prevent burning.
🎓 **Requirements:**
• 5+ years of experience machining hardened and alloy steels without burning tools or workpieces.
• Deep understanding of cutting parameters, tool geometry, and coolant application for tough materials.
• Meticulous surface finish inspection and independent tool wear monitoring.
