A multidisciplinary engineering consultancy in Calgary, Alberta, is expanding its electrical department and seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to tackle our growing backlog of power distribution projects. We handle everything from commercial high-rises to heavy industrial oil and gas facilities, and our pipeline of 0.4kV to 35kV designs has never been fuller.
Your daily design tasks:
a) Drafting single-line diagrams, load schedules, and cable sizing calculations for both exterior site distribution and interior building power systems.
b) Designing pad-mounted and indoor substations, ensuring proper equipment spacing, ventilation, and fault level coordination.
c) Performing voltage drop and short-circuit analyses for complex feeder networks, including backup generator and UPS integration for critical loads.
d) Creating detailed 2D layouts in AutoCAD and 3D BIM models in Revit, alongside photometric calculations and lighting layouts using Dialux.
e) Selecting appropriate protective relays, circuit breakers, and switchgear based on precise network parameters and coordination studies.
f) Compiling comprehensive specification packages and drawing sets for submission to the provincial electrical safety authority and client reviewers.
Candidate requirements:
a) A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSc or BEng) from an accredited Canadian university.
b) 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience in electrical design, ideally within a consulting engineering environment.
c) Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit; familiarity with Dialux or SKM/ETAP for power systems analysis is a major advantage.
d) Solid knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA standards, and local utility interconnection requirements.
Project nuances:
Many of our current contracts involve critical infrastructure and remote industrial camps where power reliability is a matter of safety. This means your calculations for redundancy, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and grounding grids must be flawless and rigorously defended during peer reviews.
Work arrangement:
Starting salary is $80,000 CAD annually. We operate on a hybrid model, allowing you to focus on deep design work from home, with mandatory office days for team coordination and periodic site visits across Alberta to verify field conditions and existing infrastructure.
