A major defense manufacturing plant in Hamilton is looking for a specialized Tool & Cutter Grinder to maintain and resharpen the cutting tools that keep our CNC machines running. This is a niche, highly skilled role for someone who understands that a dull tool is a wasted part and a ruined cycle time.
@ Core Duties:
@ Precision grinding and resharpening of a wide variety of cutting tools, including solid carbide end mills, HSS drill bits, reamers, form tools, and lathe inserts.
@ Operating manual and CNC tool and cutter grinding machines (e.g., ANCA, Walter, or Deckel) equipped with diamond and CBN wheels.
@ Using optical comparators, tool preseters, and microscopes to verify exact cutting edge geometries, relief angles, and edge preparations.
@ Salvaging and reconditioning worn tooling to extend tool life and reduce the department's consumable budget.
@ Collaborating with the CNC programmers and machinists to understand specific tooling requirements and troubleshoot tooling-related quality issues.
@ Who you are:
@ Minimum 2 years of dedicated experience as a tool and cutter grinder or in a similar precision grinding role.
@ Deep knowledge of tool geometry, cutting mechanics, and the specific grinding wheel specifications required for HSS vs. carbide.
@ Exceptional hand-eye coordination, patience, and an obsessive attention to microscopic details.
@ A formal apprenticeship or college diploma in Tool and Die Making or Precision Machining.
We offer $58,000 CAD per year, with excellent benefits and a pension plan. This is a full-time, on-site position in our dedicated, climate-controlled tool room in Hamilton. We provide all specialized grinding equipment, PPE, and measuring instruments.
