A major state-affiliated heavy industry and defense contractor in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is opening a competition for a highly skilled Vertical Turret Lathe (VTL) Operator. We manufacture massive, high-stress components for armored vehicles and artillery systems, and we need someone who is comfortable handling heavy metal and heavy responsibilities.
1] Operating single-column and double-column vertical turret lathes to machine large-diameter, heavy-weight cylindrical and conical components.
2] Performing heavy roughing and precision finishing cuts on exotic, hardened steels and high-strength alloys used in armored hulls and turret rings.
3] Independently setting up the workpiece on the rotary table, using heavy-duty clamps, steady rests, and precision dial indicators to ensure perfect concentricity and face runout.
4] Grinding and setting large-form carbide inserts and HSS tool bits to handle the extreme cutting forces and heat generated by heavy turning.
5] Conducting meticulous in-process inspections using large-bore micrometers, inside calipers, and ultrasonic testing equipment.
2] Our requirements:
2] Minimum 3 years of experience operating VTLs or heavy horizontal lathes in a heavy machinery, mining, or defense manufacturing environment.
2] The ability to read and interpret complex, large-format engineering drawings, understanding heavy-duty fits, tolerances, and surface finishes.
2] Certified in overhead crane operations and heavy rigging, as you will be responsible for safely loading and unloading multi-ton workpieces.
2] A strong safety-first mindset and the physical stamina required for heavy industrial work.
We offer $72,000 USD per year, with excellent union benefits, overtime pay, and a relocation/housing assistance package for out-of-town candidates. This is a full-time, on-site role in our massive, heated mechanical machining facility in Scranton.
