A cutting-edge UAV design bureau in Bristol is expanding its mechatronics team and looking for an Engineer to design the physical muscles of our fixed-wing drones. If you are fascinated by the intersection of mechanical engineering, electronics, and aerodynamics, and you want to build the servos and actuators that keep our aircraft stable in 40-knot crosswinds, we want you on board.
+ Designing and integrating high-torque servo actuators, linear actuators, and mechanical linkages for the ailerons, elevators, and rudders of fixed-wing UAVs.
+ Performing kinematic analysis and force calculations to size motors, gearboxes, and bearings, ensuring the control surfaces can overcome aerodynamic hinge moments at maximum dive speeds.
+ Modeling complex mechanical assemblies and custom mounting brackets in SolidWorks, optimizing for weight reduction and ease of manufacturing via CNC machining or 3D printing.
+ Selecting and integrating feedback sensors (Hall-effect, optical encoders, potentiometers) to provide closed-loop position control to the flight computer.
+ Running rigorous life-cycle and vibration testing on the actuation rigs to ensure the mechanisms survive the harsh acoustic and mechanical environment of a drone launch.
We need a candidate with at least 2 years of experience in mechanical design or mechatronics, with expert-level SolidWorks skills. A strong grasp of Theory of Machines and basic electronics is required. We offer £58,000 GBP per year, plus a generous R&D bonus structure. This is a full-time position with a hybrid work model, allowing you to perform your CAD and calculations remotely, while spending 2 days a week in our Bristol integration lab.
