A drone is only as good as its powerplant, and vibrations are the silent killer of flight controllers and optical sensors. I am a Propulsion Test Technician who specializes in building, tuning, and dynamically balancing brushless motor systems for heavy-lift and long-endurance UAVs.
From late 2020 to mid-2023, I worked as a propulsion specialist for a drone manufacturing company. My daily routine involved setting up motor-ESC combinations on calibrated thrust stands, measuring efficiency, current draw, and thermal saturation. I conducted extensive static and dynamic balancing on propellers ranging from 15 to 22 inches. By meticulously balancing over 200 sets of large-diameter props, I reduced the airframe vibration signature by an average of 35%, which directly improved the stability of the onboard IMUs.
One of my proudest projects was optimizing the motor and propeller pairing for a heavy reconnaissance quadcopter. Through rigorous bench testing and thermal profiling, I identified a setup that increased the total flight time by 18% without exceeding the motor's temperature limits. I also designed a custom vibration-dampening mount for the camera gimbal, completely eliminating the "jello" effect in the video feed.
I hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Aviation Manufacturing, and I have completed specialized coursework in the dynamics of UAV propulsion systems. I own a personal thrust stand capable of testing motors up to 5 kg of thrust and a set of precision balancing tools. I am looking for a full-time, on-site role in Austin, TX, targeting $58,000 USD.
