Designing the mechanical and plumbing systems for a building is like designing its respiratory and circulatory systems; it has to be efficient, reliable, and perfectly coordinated. I’ve been working in MEP design for over six years, starting my career in 2017 at a large engineering firm in Chicago. Initially, I focused on residential plumbing layouts and basic heat load calculations. But my real growth happened when I transitioned to commercial HVAC design in 2019, where I learned to design complex chilled water systems, VRF networks, and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS).
Currently, I work as a Lead Mechanical Designer, utilizing Revit MEP and MagiCAD to create fully coordinated 3D models. I’m responsible for everything from selecting the right AHUs and pumps to routing ductwork through congested ceiling plenums without clashing with the structural beams or electrical trays. I’ve successfully delivered the MEP designs for several Class-A office buildings and healthcare facilities, ensuring they meet strict ASHRAE standards and local energy codes. I’m looking for a stable, full-time position in a Chicago-based engineering firm, expecting around $80,000 USD. I thrive in collaborative environments and am always eager to learn about new, sustainable technologies.
