Description

A heritage precision engineering firm in Sheffield, supplying critical navigation and targeting components for the UK defense sector, is looking for a highly skilled CNC Horizontal Boring Mill Operator. We produce ultra-precise housings and gyroscopic mounts where tolerances are measured in microns, and we need a machinist who understands the physics of heavy metal cutting.

- Setting up and operating 3-axis and 4-axis CNC horizontal boring mills (e.g., DMTG, Waldrich Coburg) to machine large, complex ferrous and non-ferrous components.
- Ensuring strict adherence to geometric tolerances, specifically positional accuracy, concentricity, and bore straightness down to 0.005mm.
- Machining exotic and difficult-to-machine materials, including titanium alloys, hardened tool steels, and high-grade aluminum bronzes.
- Independently indicating and setting up heavy workpieces on the rotary table using precision dial test indicators, edge finders, and optical probes.
- Selecting, installing, and managing the tool life of heavy-duty boring bars, face mills, and drill holders, adjusting offsets to compensate for thermal growth and tool wear.

The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience operating large-format CNC boring mills in an aerospace, defense, or heavy machinery environment. You must be able to read complex 3D CAD models and 2D GD&T drawings, and possess a deep understanding of cutting mechanics and metallurgy.

We offer a salary of £45,000 GBP per year, with excellent overtime rates and a contributory pension scheme. This is a full-time, on-site position in our heavily equipped, climate-controlled machine shop in Sheffield. We provide all precision measuring equipment, heavy lifting gear, and PPE.
