Description
🏢 **About Us:**
A heavy machining facility in Houston, TX, is hiring a 5th-Class Manual Lathe Machinist for our large-capacity lathes (distance between centers up to 16 ft / 5m, max swing up to 40" / 1m). Our primary work involves large shafts, cylinders, and rolls for industrial plants. These aren't small production parts—every blank is expensive, and a mistake in setup or machining means lost time and material.
📋 **Core Responsibilities:**
• Setup & Indicating: Using steady rests, faceplates, and tailstocks; centering and checking runout with a dial indicator.
• Steady Rest Operation: Supporting long shafts to prevent deflection under cutting forces.
• Precision Measurement: Holding tolerances of 0.001" - 0.002" using micrometers and indicators.
• Hard Turning: Machining weld buildup deposits back to final dimensions without losing geometry.
• Roughing & Finishing: Selecting speeds, feeds, and depths of cut based on material condition.
🎓 **Requirements:**
• 3+ years of experience turning long, heavy parts.
• Mastery of steady rests, centers, and metal behavior under heavy cuts.
• A methodical machinist who stops the machine if the part starts to "chatter" rather than forcing a pass.
✨ **What We Offer:**
• Target Salary: $60,000 USD annually.
• Full-time, on-site role in Houston, TX.
• Official employment, premium regional pay for 5th-class skills, and heavy machinery allowances.
